Second intersessional SAICM meeting opens in Sweden on Tuesday

A three-day second meeting of the intersessional process considering the Strategic Approach and the sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020 will kick off in Stockholm, Sweden on Tuesday March 13 to 15 Thursday 2018.
The meeting coming up after the conclusion of regional meetings from the informal structure of the United Nations General Assembly comprising Africa, Asia-Pacific, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and Caribbean, Western Europe and other groups will draw participants from non-governmental organisations, governments and development experts.
The fourth session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management through resolution IV/4, initiated an intersessional process to prepare recommendations regarding the Strategic Approach and the sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020 before the fifth session of the Conference in 2020.
Besides, that recommendations developed by the intersessional process will provide an important basis for decision making regarding the Strategic Approach and the sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020 at the fifth session of the Conference in 2020.
In the provisional agenda of the meeting obtained by Ecogreennews on Monday from SAICM website, it stipulated that preliminary results of the independent evaluation of the Strategic Approach 2006-2015 would be presented while there would also be consideration of beyond 2020; policy principles and measurable objectives and milestones.
Other focus of the meeting would be on responding to new and emerging issues; national implementation; financing implementation of the sound management of chemicals and waste among others.
The first meeting of the intersessional process took place in Brasilia, Brazil, from 7 to 9 February 2017, upon the invitation of the Government of Brazil.
